For starters, the room we did a makeover on was the one room in the house that I dreaded. The size of the room itself is awkward. It’s too small for a bedroom, but we also needed the space for a play area and office. After months of pinterest boards and unattainable dreams I finally threw in the towel and reached out to Laura from Roanoke Trading Company to save me on this one. I can not thank her enough for helping make my dreams and visions a reality for this space.
For the longest time this room was disgusting. The walls were gross, awkward shape, too small for a bedroom, all the horrible things you name it that room was. It made me cringe every time I walked by it. To put this into perspective, this room used to be the room where we’d keep the door shut. My husband could beg to differ!
Now that Corbin is starting to get to that age of needing a playroom. (AKA… mama needs the toys to be in one place.) It the right time and starting to become waaayyy overdue. So glad we did it when we did and before it would get out of control. (type A speaking here)
First step to redoing any room would be to evaluate the paint color. A simple paint change can completely change the look of any room. The color we used was Sherwin Williams light French Gray. That color was the same color we painted Corbin’s bedroom. It’s such a good gray that doesn’t pull blues or purples. If I could have every room in the house that color I would! After paint is done it’s time for the fun part… decorating and decor.
When redoing a room the little things like new lighting and updated hardware makes a big difference. I love this ceiling light, it’s boho but works a modern styled playroom too.
Now for the fun stuff! After getting the walls dressed up, the next step was to add quality kid friendly playroom furniture and organization, but at affordable pricing. Corbin mainly use books, stuffed animals, manipulative toys and just a few bigger toys in this space. I knew I wanted a cube shelf for toy storage, I searched all over for the right one. Finally after weeks, I hunted down this one from Target. I found that the 16″ 8 cube shelf organizer was the better option for toys than the 11,” it held more toys!
From the start I knew I wanted to include a teepee or playhouse. Surprisingly Corbin loves it! The quality is really nice and comes with the star lights too. It’s the perfect little spot for a cozy snuggle or two. The pillows inside are a mixture of different neutral colors with a pop of blue from the Honey + Hank Texas Boot pillow. I love Honey + Hank designs and pillows. They’re great quality and add just the right about of personal touch. Each design is has tiny Texas states to form the look of a boot. Y’all need to check out her other pieces and other state collections too.

I knew I wanted to display certain books and have floating shelves. I love the look of floating shelves in kids playrooms and rooms. (These include the special ones from that I knew Corbin would love.) These two shelves were personally handmade and are from Roanoke Trading Company. Sweet Laura, the owner, hooked me up with these personalized shelves for the space of this big wall. It looks even better in person. The “play” letters are my favorite. It’s timeless, suttle and classic for a gender neutral playroom. Being an educator books and play are my two main focuses. This area of the playroom captures that perfectly.
The rug pictured here is from Roanoke Trading Company and I have to tell y’all it’s so soft and the best quality. It does not shed and stays in place. The tassels do not come apart either. I’m just so impressed by the quality of this rug and the price is on point for such a large rug too.
The other favorite statement piece from Roanoke Trading Company is this darling sign. It is so precious and speaks such good words. It’s one of those signs that is so classic and darling for a kiddos room.
For our desk, this white one was gifted to us from a sweet friend, but I have linked a similar one below..
Adding personal touches to a room make it personal and I love knowing stories behind certain pieces. The three pictures of the old fashion airplane were given to my husband from his dad. They belonged to his grandmother. She used to collect antiques and he had these laying around from her. It’s perfect since Colin flies and uses this space at times for work. Other details included on the desk are either from Target or Home Goods. Everything is linked below…
When decorated a desk you want to keep it as simple as possible because less is more. I love adding greenery and a simple clock to a desk it adds the right amount of decor without overdoing it. The more you can keep desk decor simple the better, especially when sharing the space in a playroom.
Roanoke Trading Company is a great place to find your home decor pieces, gifts, holiday finds, personal decorating and more! Laura the owner is incredible and can help you in person or virtually.
In the weeks since I finished this project we’ve all snuggled in the teepee many times to enjoy the new playroom space! It’s my favorite room in the house and I never knew I would spend so much time in here. So worth it all and Laura from Roanoke Trading Company was such a help with the design too. I love actually using a space for its given purpose, and I hope these tips are helpful when you prepare to create your own playroom/office space!
I hope this is helpful for you all to maximize your space in your home. Office/ playrooms can be hard, but this should help you jumpstart an easy, affordable and gender neutral space!
